Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) is a highly contagious viral disease affecting cloven-hoofed animals, including cattle, sheep, goats and pigs. The disease can spread rapidly and cause significant production and economic losses.

Key signs to look out for include:

  • Fever
  • Blisters and sores in the mouth and around the feet
  • Excessive salivation
  • Lameness or reluctance to move
  • Loss of appetite and weight loss
  • Reduced milk production

Farmers are encouraged to maintain strong biosecurity measures, monitor their animals regularly and avoid unnecessary movement of livestock. Any suspected case should be reported immediately to the local State Veterinarian.

Early detection and rapid reporting are essential to protecting livestock, farmers’ livelihoods and South Africa’s agricultural sector.

AFASA remains committed to supporting farmers through education, awareness and responsible livestock management.
