Through the AFASA National–Land Bank Engagement Framework, AFASA utilised existing cooperation mechanisms to engage directly with Land Bank Provincial Managers and provincial teams across the country.
The approval process is structured as follows:
- Applications up to R10 million are processed and approved at provincial level.
- Applications above R10 million and up to R20 million are processed at regional level.
- Applications exceeding R20 million are referred to the Land Bank National Office for consideration and approval.
One of the key lessons from this journey has been the importance of farmers establishing strong working relationships with Provincial Managers and their teams. These officials play a critical role in guiding applications, providing feedback, and facilitating progress throughout the funding process.
Members are encouraged to engage proactively with Provincial Managers, maintain regular communication, and ensure that all compliance requirements are met as early as possible. A well-prepared application, supported by ongoing engagement, can significantly improve the efficiency of the process.
At the same time, AFASA National will continue to engage with relevant stakeholders on systemic challenges affecting farmer access to finance. These include approval processes, turnaround times, developmental support mechanisms, and barriers that continue to limit the commercialisation and growth of black farmers.
Our collective responsibility is clear:
- Farmers must build strong relationships and submit quality applications.
- Provincial and Regional Structures must provide efficient support and guidance.
- AFASA National must continue to address policy and systemic constraints affecting access to finance.
By working together, we can strengthen access to funding opportunities and accelerate the commercialisation and sustainability of black farmers across South Africa.
